According to the definition provided by CNPq, a research group is a set of individuals organized hierarchically around one or, occasionally, two leaders:
- the organizing principle of this hierarchy is the experience, prominence, and leadership in the scientific or technological field;
- there is ongoing professional involvement in research activities;
- the work is organized around common research lines that subordinate to the group (and not the other way around);
- and, to some extent, shared facilities and equipment are utilized.
